FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cholko is Only Candidate in 39th District Delegate Race that Commits to Not Raising Taxes
Annandale, VA, September 28, 2009- In a recent Fairfax County Times article, both Democratic incumbent Vivian Watts and Republican candidate Joe Bury indicated that raising taxes on their constituents was something they would consider. Matt Cholko, the Libertarian candidate, said he would not raise taxes and would instead cut state spending dramatically.
“These are hard times economically for many Virginians. Raising their taxes when there are so many potential budget cuts is, to me, unconscionable,” says Cholko. “I am the only candidate in this race that is willing to stand up for Virginia's families and tell the legislature to stop trying to find yet another way to tax us and instead take the more difficult route and cut the fat out of the budget.”
The Times' article says that Bury would consider voting to raise his constituents' taxes if that money would stay in northern Virginia. The same article quotes Watts as saying that she would like to see the legislature come up with bipartisan ways to generate more revenue.
Ms. Watts has a long history of voting to raise Virginian's taxes. Last year, Ms. Watts introduced a bill to raise the gas tax by 5.5 cents per gallon. That bill was defeated. She later voted “yes” on SB 6009 which would raise retail sales taxes in northern Virginia and Hampton Roads as well as the gas tax on all Virginians in order to grow the state's Supplemental Highway Maintenance and Mass Transit Fund. This bill was also defeated.
“The fact is that Vivian Watts has been involved in public service for decades. She has lead the state on budgetary and transportation issues and here we are in the budgetary and transportation messes that we are today. We have to try something else, constantly voting to raise taxes doesn't work.” said Cholko.
